Privacy Policy

OWN exists so a stranger can return something you lost without either of you giving up your privacy. That only works if it is clear what we hold, what a finder sees, and what we never show.

01

QR tags

A printed code on a keyring, a sticker or a card. Anyone can scan it with any phone camera. No app, no account.

What a finder sees

You decide, tag by tag. They see the item's name, your note, the details you chose to make public, and your first name only if you turned that on. Never your email, your address, your phone number or your other items.

They reach you by writing from that page, and you can turn messages off for any tag:

  • MessagesA conversation between the two of you. Neither side ever sees the other's phone number.
  • The finder's numberA finder writing from the web page leaves a phone number so your replies can reach them. OWN keeps it to relay those replies and never shows it to you. It may also be used to write to them now and then about OWN, until they ask us to stop.

What a scan records

A scan records when it happened, and we tell you about it. That is the product: without it, a scan is a stranger holding your keys and no way for you to know.

A scan does not record where the finder is. A finder never needs an account, and their name is only there if they choose to write it.

Messages with a finder

Messages are stored so the thread survives closing the app. They are between the two of you. OWN's support tools show that a conversation exists and how many messages it holds, never what was written, except a message the safety check below stopped.

Before a message is delivered, it is checked automatically for harassment, insults, threats and scams: by OWN's own word list, and by an AI model (Claude, made by Anthropic) that reads the message with the last few lines of the conversation. Anthropic does not use these messages to train its models. A message the check stops is not delivered; it is kept with the reason, so OWN can review it and stop anyone who keeps trying.

02

Trackers

A small Bluetooth device. Phones that pass near it report where it was heard, from time to time, so you can see where it last was without waiting for somebody to scan anything.

Location history

A tracker's reported positions are yours. They appear in your app and in that tracker's history, and they are never shown to anyone who scans your tag.

There is no live location: a position is only as recent as the last phone that passed the tracker. One that has not been heard yet has no position and no history, and you will see it say so rather than a guess.

If you set location for OWN to "all the time", your phone's position is saved only at the moment it hears one of your own trackers, to keep that tracker's last place current. It is not used to follow you.

Bluetooth and nearby devices

The app uses Bluetooth to pair a tracker, ring it, and find it when you are close. Bluetooth is used to reach your own device, not to look at anything else around you.

Turning one off

Switch a tracker off and it stops reporting. Unpair it and its history is removed from your account.

03

Across all of OWN

True whatever you own.

Your account

To own a tag you need an account: your name, email and phone number. Your phone number is never shown to a finder, and no setting shows it.

A profile photo is optional. If you add one, it is stored privately with your account so it shows on your phones and on findown.co. Only you and OWN's support team can see it, never a finder, and it is deleted with your account.

Orders and payment

Buying a tag needs a delivery address and a phone number for the courier. Card details are entered on the payment provider's own page — OWN never sees a full card number. OWN keeps none of your card details.

Permissions the app asks for

Each is asked for when it is first needed, and the app works without any of them, with less of it available.

  • CameraTo scan a QR code. Images are read on your phone and never uploaded.
  • LocationTo show a tracker on a map and to power left-behind alerts.
  • BluetoothTo pair a tracker, ring it, and find it when you are close.
  • NotificationsTo tell you the moment one of your tags is scanned. We also send occasional news and offers; you can turn these off any time in the app, under Profile, then Notifications.

Ads and measurement

Some pages on findown.co tell Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, what happens on them: the home page, About, Get the app, the shop, a product page and the basket. They report that the page was opened, which product was looked at and what went into the basket. We use this to learn which of our ads led to a visit or a sale, and to show our ads again to people who have visited the shop.

The checkout, which Shopify runs, reports to Meta as well: when checkout starts, when payment details are added and when an order is placed. It sends the email address you type there in a scrambled form that cannot be read back, together with your IP address, your browser's details and a number Shopify gives each customer, so Meta can connect the order to the ad that led to it.

Nothing about a tag reaches Meta. The page a finder opens, a scan, a message, your account, your dashboard and your location never load Meta's code.

Every page on findown.co also tells Google Analytics that it was opened, so we can see how many people reach each part of the site and where they came from. It is told the kind of page and not which one: the page a finder opens is reported as a finder page, and the code printed on the tag is taken out of the address before it is sent. The same is true of a conversation. Google Analytics is never told your name, your email address or your phone number, and it is not used to show you ads.

The public pages of findown.co and the shop also use Microsoft Clarity, so we can see how visitors use the site and make it better: where people click, how far they scroll and which pages they open, as recordings of the visit and heatmaps that do not say who you are. What you type into a form is hidden from it. The page a finder opens, conversations, your account, your dashboard, sign-in and sign-up are never recorded: Clarity's code does not run on them. Clarity keeps a cookie so that the pages of one visit can be put together. Microsoft processes this data under its own privacy statement: privacy.microsoft.com/privacystatement

What we do not do

We do not sell your data, rent it, or trade it. We do not show one person's items to another. Nothing about your tags, your scans or your messages is used for advertising.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account yourself, from Settings. It cannot be undone. Your tags go back to being unused tags and stop reaching you, your trackers are released, and the conversations about your tags, your notifications, pets, tag photos and scan history are erased.

Past orders are kept, because OWN has to account for every sale, but nothing on them links to you any more. Messages you sent another owner about their tag stay in their conversation, no longer linked to your account.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle your data we will say so here and date it. If a change is material we will tell you in the app rather than hope you read this page.

Questions

If something here is unclear, or you want to know what we hold about you, write to us and a person will answer.
